Watching sports on TV is never as much fun at playing them yourself, but then again I don’t think I’d have much fun attempting to snowboard for the first time. The Winter Olympics have been my go to programming since they began. The competition, the magic… the style!

Let’s begin with the corset comeback.

Whistle While You Work

One of my favorite sportswriters, Jason Sobel, recently published a great article on espn.com entitled “For Tiger, golf just isn’t fun anymore.” It got me thinking about what I do for fun, and what I would do if I lost my passion for something time consuming and central to my life. I’d be hard pressed to find a good replacement, and would rather take a break and try again.

When I See An Elephant Fly

‘Tis the season for hot chocolate, wool jackets, wish lists, and swapping. I’m not talking about a holiday party Yankee swap. Although it might as well be. No, I’m referring instead to the antics reserved for professional athletes, coaches, agents, and teams.

It’s the usual suspects again this year with Notre Dame football and the New York Yankees making early headlines about personnel changes. It’s only fitting that during the recession everyone is looking for the best deal. Too bad the best deal will cost an arm and a leg.

During this season of giving, everyone is looking for is an upgrade. I’m asking Santa for a gray pea coat while Johnny Damon is asking for a major contract extension and the money that goes with it. I wouldn’t feel comfortable having Scott Boras write my requests to Santa Claus for fear of coal in my stocking. Damon might as well send a super agent to do his bidding because Yankees don’t seem to be as strict in giving large gifts whether you’re naughty or nice.

The Yankees are doing more than giving this year. They continue to be the best as receiving (or taking if you’re a Red Sox fan). They describe recent acquisition Curtis Granderson as “the total package” leaving a little less room for Damon under the tree.

While he’ll get a nice offer, or present as the case may be, I doubt it will match his original requests. Johnny Damon’s entire wish list will be fulfilled “when I see an elephant fly.”
